“Satisfaction Guaranteed.” It’s stamped on boxes, splashed across websites, sewn into the fine print of every purchase we make. We’ve been trained to expect it — the promise that if something doesn’t deliver, we can return it, dispute it, get our money back. We are a people who have learned to want guarantees.
But we were always looking for them. Long before return policies and customer service lines, the disciples were in the Upper Room, anxious and unmoored, reaching for reassurance. Thomas wanted a map. Philip wanted proof. And underneath both requests was the same ache we all carry — show us something we can hold onto. This congregation knows better than most what it costs when guarantees turn out to be lies: promises made and broken by systems that never intended to keep them. The search for something real, something that actually holds, runs deep here. This Sunday, Rev. Wendy Miller Olapade opens John 14:1-14 and the question Jesus refuses to dodge.
Jesus doesn’t offer a travel app or a satisfaction survey. He offers himself — a place prepared, a presence that stays, and a purpose big enough to give your life to. Turns out the guarantee is real. It just looks nothing like what we thought we were ordering.
Worship begins at 11:00 am. Shiloh Baptist Church, 1 Holton Street, Medford. All are welcome.
