“When I Think…”
Psalm 103:1-5 (KJV)
Most of us have a better memory for what went wrong than for what went right. We can recite the diagnosis, the layoff, the betrayal, the bill that came due, almost word for word. But ask us to name the morning we woke up well, the debt that got forgiven, the door that opened after we were sure it had closed for good, and the memory goes fuzzy. Hurt has a long memory. Gratitude has to be trained.
David knew this. Psalm 103 isn’t the song of someone whose life was easy. It’s a man preaching to his own soul, telling himself to bless the Lord and not forget. Then he starts making a list: forgiveness, healing, redemption from the pit, a crown of steadfast love and mercy. He writes it down because he knows how quickly a soul can lose the thread.
This Sunday at Shiloh, Rev. Dr. Jaron S. Green opens Psalm 103:1-5 in a sermon titled “When I Think…” Come ready to finish that sentence for yourself. Because when you start remembering what God has already done, thank you stops being a polite word and becomes a testimony.
